Hey everyone, welcome to episode three of BibimPOP with Sean. This is where, as you know, pop culture ate. How is everyone doing today? I am recording this episode a few days before it drops and this weekend, which by the time you're listening to this podcast, the time has already passed. I am going on a little weekend vacation with my husband and sister and some cousins, aka my besties and just to spend some holiday time together before we go spend time with our respective families later this month.
And I'm just really excited for a little weekend getaway to, you know, just jump in the hot tub, make some s'mores, watch holiday movies. DoorDash and Uber Eats. Every single thing I can find and think about. I don't know about you, but when I think about food delivery, I definitely like Taco Bell. Taco Bell is the first thing, and really the only thing that comes to my mind.
And sometimes I crave Taco Bell in like the middle of the night. So I hop on Uber Eats and I'm like scrolling, and I'm looking through the Taco Bell menu, and I get my Baja Blast and I get my Crunchwrap Supreme. And I love Taco Bell. Anyway, DoorDash and Uber Eats everything this weekend. I'm excited and we are doing a holiday murder mystery dinner, which I am so excited for.
When we arrive, we're going to get our character assignment. I love me a good murder mystery, not only on the TV screen or in the movie theater, but also in real life as I act out and play a murder mystery. And this is really the first year that we are doing this, I, we haven't ever done this before as a group.
And already I can already tell, like, can we just make this a tradition? Can we do this every single year? Anyway, it's going to be fun. I'm super Jaz, I hope that you have something that you're looking forward to this holiday season, something that excites you, something that you're that you've been wanting to do. Speaking of making things a tradition, what are some of your holiday traditions?
I will have to share some of mine in another episode because it is time to dive in to episode three. We are talking about the 2025 Golden Globe nominations, which were recently released and there is so much to discuss, so let's get into it.
All right, all right. We're just going to dive right into it and go into the heavy hitter category. First. Best motion pictures for the areas of drama, musical or comedy and animated in drama. The nominations are a complete - conclave Dune part two Nickel Boys, September 5th. The brutalist. All right, so looking at that list, we've got two Timothy Salomé nominations in this category.
And I don't know about you, but I am a huge Timothy Charlemagne fan. He better win. I want to see him win a Golden Globe. There is nothing like literally nothing that he has done that I haven't just absolutely loved. You can just tell that when he is in his element of acting, that he is fully committed to the role that he is playing.
He's studied, he's done his research, and he is the literal embodiment of whoever it is he's portraying. It's honestly so impressive. Okay, but side know, is it weird to have some movies on this list that haven't actually been released to theaters yet, like a complete -? It's weird because I feel like we're coming to the end of the year, and there's movies on this list that haven't been released yet, so it's like, come on, let's go.
We got to get this movie released so we can actually like it will only feel official as like a Golden Globe nomination when it's been released in theaters. As far as a complete - goes, this is where Timothee Salomé is portraying Bob Dylan. It's a biopic and I'm not that big of a fan of biopic movies. Honestly, I never even saw Elvis, even though I really like Austin Butler.
And there's been a couple other biopic movies that I just haven't been interested in seeing, so I don't know, I'll probably see this one just because I'm such a massive fan of Timothee Chalamet. I don't know if it's going to be my absolute favorite movie because I just I don't know what it is. I'm just not into biopics.
Maybe you can tell me if you're into biopic movies, tell me what you enjoy about them, maybe tell me what to look for and maybe what I should enjoy about them. And that will help me to see another perspective. So I don't know. We'll see. I'm going to see it. I want to see it. We'll see. I don't know.
Anyway, looking at that list, I've really only seen one movie on that list, and that is due in part to yet another Timothee Salomé movie. And I really enjoyed Dune Part two. Sometimes sequels are just not as good as the first movie, and in this case it's not true. Dune part two is absolutely fantastic. I love the cast, obviously.
Timothee Zendaya is in this one more than she was the first movie, and so that was really fun to see her. Austin Butler Florence Pugh I love Florence Dave Bautista there's just an absolute stellar cast for this movie and it was really well done. The world building, I mean, insane out of this world. The sandworms. Okay, like so cool.
It's so cool how the sandworms are portrayed and how they're a part of the movie, the actual plot. And I really like how in Dune part to the benefits, does it have more of a role? There's this faction that's just so interesting to me because at least for me, I haven't read the book. And so I can't really tell if they're good, if they're bad, and they definitely have a very important role.
I believe even moving forward into this series, they become even more important. And so it's been really cool to see that storyline of the Bennet Jesuit faction or guild or whatever you want to call it, build and become stronger and more powerful and more influential. And so I just thought all around Dune Part two was spectacular. If you haven't seen it, definitely go and see it.
It's really well done. The cast is amazing. And of course you know me. I love political thrillers, and Dune Part two is essentially a political thriller, but make it sci fi and I love that. Speaking of political thrillers, another on the list is conclave. I haven't seen it, but the plot sounds interesting, right? Like a secretive and ancient process of electing a new pope following the sudden death of the previous, and this film reveals the power struggles, the ethical dilemmas that unfold within this locked Vatican chamber.
The cardinals faced challenges such as hidden scandals, conflicting ideologies and personal ambitions. I mean, I don't know about you, but conclave sounds really spooky and I am excited about that. I love that I kind of definitely really actually want to see it now, so I'll have to watch it and then give a review on it. If you've seen it, let me know what you think.
I remember when the current Pope was selected, and if I remember correctly, there's like tradition of burning smoke to indicate when there has been a consensus or an agreement or a decision made on who the Pope is. And I just remember thinking that was so interesting to me. And so I don't know if that's a part of this story of conclave.
I hope it is, because that would just be really cool to see play out on the big screen. September 5th is another movie on this list, and I'm not going to go through all the movies. I just want to highlight a few. September 5th is described as a historical drama, which honestly, pretty much immediately turns me off, but I need to broaden my horizons.
This movie is about the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis, through the perspective of the American sports broadcasting team at ABC. And obviously this was before my time, but it actually sounds interesting. I had no idea that this happened in history, and so, I don't know, maybe I can give it a try and see if I like it. If you've seen it, let me know if you liked it.
All right, all right, let's move on to the Best Picture category for musical or comedy. Wicked. That's all I have to say. Wicked, wicked. Better. When granted from this category, it's the only movie I've seen as well that's on the list. I feel so ashamed to say that because I really wanted to see challengers with Zendaya, and I just didn't get the opportunity to.
And so it's on my list. I want to see it, and I am going to stick with my winner pick of wicked for this category of Best Picture in a musical or comedy. And I was thinking about wicked recently, and I shouldn't even say recently, because all the time I'm thinking about it all the time nowadays. But I was thinking about wicked, and I remembered that Disney kind of had their own wicked story when they came out with the live action Maleficent story.
And Maleficent, if you know me, is like my favorite Disney villain. I love her, I mean, and she turns into a dragon. So, like, what's not to love, right? And I just remember being so excited that Disney was doing kind of like their own spin on the wicked story with Maleficent. And I was so disappointed with the movie, I didn't think it was done well.
I didn't like the story. I actually would have preferred for them just to do a live action of the Sleeping Beauty story as it's told through Disney, and just leave Maleficent evil through and through. No redemption arc. And that's not how I feel about wicked. I feel like wicked did such a great job of showing the viewer a different perspective of the Wicked Witch, of the West's life and upbringing, so that you understand her and her ambitions and what she's doing and why she's doing what she's doing.
So anyway, all that to say, I think wicked did it right. Disney did not. And wicked should definitely win the Golden Globe for this category. Speaking of, here's some fun facts about wicked. Wicked. The musical started in 2003 and has made guess just guess, guess how much they think of a number in your head. Guess how much wicked has made since starting.
It has made almost $1.68 billion, with over 14.5 million people seeing the musical and the movie has broken records for a Broadway to film musical adaptation, and had made 114 million in its opening weekend alone. That is absolutely amazing. The cinematography, the acting, the singing, the set design, the costuming, all of it was so absolutely mind blowing. And as I discussed previously, challenger's the romantic sports drama with Zendaya also on the list.
I just remember seeing all of Zendaya's cute press outfits for this movie, and that alone made me want to see this movie. I'm sure the movie itself is more than just Zendaya looking cute, but that's what made me want to see the movie. And so eventually I will get around to it. Another movie on this list is Emilia Perez, and it's getting a lot of attention from the Golden Globes.
If you look at the Golden Globes full nomination list, you'll see Emilia Perez as a movie, and actors from the movie are nominated multiple times in multiple categories. And this is a 2024 Spanish language musical drama. Following a powerful Mexican drug lord who hires a lawyer to help her fake her own death to start a new life. And I don't want to spoil anything.
But the story dives into themes of gender identity, family redemption and consequences, and Selena Gomez plays the drug lords daughter and has her own journey. And it just sounds so interesting. And just as a little side note, I'm so excited about this. Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco just got engaged on December 11th and I love this. A source told people magazine about the special moment, which included Gomez's favorite meal from none other than Taco Bell.
Yes, I absolutely love that. All I do is think about Taco Bell. And so, you know what? If Selena Gomez is thinking about Taco Bell too, then at least I know I'm in good company, the source says. Quote, it was a total surprise to Selena that close quote. Her post on Instagram was of her wedding ring with the caption quote forever begins now close quote.
Is that not so cute? She seems so happy and I am really happy for her. And others are very happy for her as well. Taylor Swift commented on the post and said quote, yes, I will be the flower girl. Close quote and I am living for whenever it happens because obviously it is going to be epic. Congratulations to Selena and Benny Blanco.
All right my friends, if you're liking this content so far, make sure to subscribe, follow, like and share.
All right. And then we've got the Best Picture category for animated. And the only one I've seen on this list is Inside Out too. I'm noticing a theme here. I've only seen one movie on every single nomination list for each category, but as I said in my last episode, I still need to see Moana two, which was also nominated.
I just really like Inside Out too. It's so playful, it's fun, and it's a great build on the first Inside Out movie. In fact, Inside Out too. As you know, I'm in elementary school principal and I used Inside Out two to create our school theme for this year, which is Be Your Best you. Because that's what Inside Out is all about.
It's about recognizing who we are, embracing our feelings and our emotions, being ourselves and not just being ourselves, but being the best version of ourselves. So love the movie. I hope Inside Out two wins. It makes kids happy. How can you not want it to win? Oh right. So we've covered some best picture nominations. Let's get into some actor awards.
All right. First we're going to start with some female actor award nominations. And we'll start with the category Best Performance by a Female Actor in a motion Picture Drama category. There are some big names on this list, like Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton. It's also the first Golden Globe nomination for Pamela Anderson, and I haven't seen any other movies in this category, but I did notice that Maria with Angelina Jolie, I think was just put on Netflix.
So maybe it's a movie that I need to check out since it's so easily accessible right now. But if you've seen any of these movies, let me know some recommendations. All right, moving on to the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a motion picture Musical or Comedy. I'm loving the names I am seeing on this list Amy Adams, Cynthia Erivo, Demi Moore, Zendaya, and I love Amy and Zendaya, but this year it just has to be Cynthia.
The witches from wicked have got to win. They deserve it. They did so amazing. She was absolutely incredible and wicked. And I mean just having to undergo four hours every day of green makeup application. That alone, I feel like deserves a Golden Globe and it's really impressive that she insisted on singing live when filming instead of lip syncing.
Cynthia said, no, Britney here, and in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture, we've got some great names. Once again Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez apparently I need to see the Amelia Perez movie because there are two actors from this movie in this category, and it's pretty rare to have two actors from one movie nominated in a single category, so it must be a really great movie.
The only movie I have seen in this category is, you guessed it, wicked. Sorry. I do think Ariana was fantastic as Linda. She also sang live for all the songs. And did you see the high kick she did in popular? That moment was like jaw dropping. She also impressively did some of her own stunts, like swinging from the chandelier.
Take note Sia and she beat out other actresses big names for this role like Amanda Seyfried, Dove Cameron and Renee Wrap.
I. All right, let's move into some male actor award nominations and best performance by a male actor in a motion Picture Drama. There are some good names here. Adrien Brody, Daniel Craig, Sebastian, Stan, Timothee, Salomé, and I haven't seen any of the movies. Sorry, such a disappointment. I can't even comment on a single one, but I do want to say that a complete - with Timothee Chalamet took about five years to get going because of Covid and labor union strikes, and so this has been a long time coming for this movie.
It's hard to imagine any project taking that long. I don't think I could sustain my attention for five years on a single project, so that just makes me feel like I want to root for the movie for that reason alone. And something else interesting about this movie. Timothy prerecorded songs and sang live, and they went with the live tracks.
Because again, there is nothing that Timothy cannot do for best performance by a male actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy, we've got Glen Powell, Hugh Grant, Jesse Eisenberg, Sebastian Stan, and I hope Hugh Grant wins for the movie heretic, which can I just say heretic being in the category of musical or comedy. Have you seen the movie?
It's not funny and it's certainly not a musical, so I don't know how heretic made it into this category. I'm glad heretic made it into a category because the movie is so absolutely incredible. Definitely not a comedy or musical, though. In any case, heretic was out of this world. Good. As someone who grew up in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints or the Mormon Church and who currently lives in Utah, which over half of the people in the state identify as Mormon.
It was so interesting to see this movie having that perspective that I do. It's a religious horror thriller, and the story follows two young women Mormon missionaries who are lured into a dangerous and manipulative game by a mysterious and eccentric man while attempting to convert him. The film combines suspenseful and psychological elements with a nuanced exploration of religious themes, and I heard somewhere that the actors who play the missionaries actually grew up in the Mormon faith and had experience by which to draw on for their characters, and they played the parts so well.
I can say this with certainty I was a mormon missionary for two years, from 23 to 25 years old, and I was sent on my mission to Las Vegas, Nevada. And watching this movie brought me right back to my time knocking on doors with my assigned missionary companion. And I remember situations like I remember very specific situations where I would knock on a door, or I would walk up to a door, and for whatever reason, I just didn't feel safe.
It was giving creepy, scary vibes, and this movie just made those memories come flooding back and it felt so real. And the mistake that, well, I don't want to spoil it, I don't want to spoil it. So you just have to see the movie. It's so good. Really. I think every missionary should watch this movie before going on a mission.
I think as young people in like late teens or early 20s, you just have this sense that you're absolutely invincible to the world when really you're not. And this movie might prompt some future missionaries to maybe just think twice before entering into the home of a stranger. Okay, but this part is not a spoiler. If you've seen the trailer, there's this part where the Mormon missionaries are inside of his house, and as missionaries, you're only supposed to enter a home if there's another adult of the same gender who is in the home as well.
And so the girls ask, is your wife home? And he says, yes, she's home. She's just making blueberry pie and time goes on. They don't see her. They're getting a little skeptical. And he leaves the room to, quote, get his wife. And the missionaries are thinking, something's up. And they look at a candle that's lit on the coffee table, and they turn it around to look at the scent.
And the scent is none other than blue berry pie. Are you creeped out? Are you getting, like, the shivers I am? It's so creepy. It's so creepy. Oh my gosh. Okay, so anyway, obviously you just have to go and see the movie. The movie explores themes about religion and why you believe what you believe, why you choose certain values.
It's just so good. All right, we're moving on. There's just so many more categories for us to discuss.
And I want to talk about best television series next in the drama category we have quite a few nominations. And again I've only seen one. But the nominations are The diplomat, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Shogun, Slow Horses, Squid Game two, The Day of the Jackal, and guess which one I've seen? Did you guess the political thriller The Diplomat?
No way. You're right. Okay, to be fair, I did see Squid Game one, and I'm excited to see Squid Game two. It's not even out yet, so there wasn't an opportunity for me to see it. I will watch it when it comes out. The on set locations for The Diplomat are stunning and a reason alone for this show to win in this category.
Much of the show is filmed in London, and the ambassador's residence in the show is absolutely beautiful. It's at a historic estate near London. The picturesque rural landscapes of the Cotswolds were featured along with a castle in Scotland. They go to Paris and they're on a bridge over the Senne river. And Keri Russell is just amazing. She is funny.
She is. Sometimes she's confident and very self-assured. Other times she feels like she doesn't know what she's doing. She's really a dynamic character in this show, and she plays the character so well for music or comedy and TV. Abbott Elementary, The Bear Hacks. Nobody wants this, only murders in the building. The gentlemen are all nominations for this category.
As an elementary school principal, I can confirm that Abbott Elementary is hilarious. I have not seen all the episodes, but I do want to say that in a recent episode, the principal of the school, Ava, is trying to dodge a meeting with someone. So she tells her secretary, tell him I'm on Survivor and I absolutely love this. Literally, girl can relate, can relate.
I need to see the bear. Everyone tells me I would enjoy it. I do want to talk about only murders in the building. I just finished the most recent season and every season is just as good as the first. Steve Martin Martin Short and Selena Gomez are brilliant, their chemistry together is magical and they just create such fun and engaging entertainment.
I also love the many special guests that are on the show like Meryl Streep, Eva Longoria. There's so many to name and I was looking up information about only murders in the building, and I thought it was so funny that Steve Martin knew nothing like literally nothing about Wizards of Waverly Place. And Selena Gomez didn't really know Martin Short, and so she googled him to learn more about him before working with him for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for television.
All I have to say is the Penguin on Macs should win the Penguin. Hands down. I'm a Batman fan. I always have been, ever since I was a kid, and the Penguin was always an interesting character to me. Like when he would carry the umbrellas and he would use the umbrellas as like a weapon sometimes, and he would, like, fly away with them.
And then he would anyway. I don't know why, but as a kid I thought it was so funny. And I like that he was named after a cute little animal, even though he himself is not cute. And Colin Farrell in this adaptation of The Penguin, it's very dark, it's very sinister, and he is so good. I don't know how long it takes for him to get into his makeup and body suit and all the changes that they do. He looks nothing like Colin Farrell.
I. All right. I'm just going to go through a list of television actors that I want to win. There are so many categories for TV actors, so I'm just going to highlight these few best performance by a female actor in a television series drama. Keira Knightley for Black Doves or Keri Russell for The Diplomat. I would be okay with either of them winning.
I just finished like literally right before recording this podcast I just finished or I actually, I'm in the middle. I am in the middle of a Black Doves episode right now and it is so good. Carrie Russell in The Diplomat, though, like I said, is amazing. Honestly, if I had to give it to one of them, it would be Keri Russell, because there's two seasons of The Diplomat and I feel like I just know that story in that world better than I do black doves right now.
But Black Doves is definitely more action, more exciting. There's more happening in the show, and so that is a strong contender as well. Best performance by an actor in a Television Series drama. This has to go to Jake Gyllenhaal, Jackie G for Presumed Innocent, that limited series on Apple TV was so good. The twists and the turns, there was so much about it that was unexpected, unpredictable keeps you on your toes.
The pacing is right. It never felt slow, labored, or forced. It's a murder mystery. I love it. Jake Gyllenhaal delivered and you have to see Presumed Innocent if you have not already done so. Best performance by a Female Actor in a television series, musical or comedy. Oh, it can go either way for me. Either Kathryn Hahn for Agatha All along or Selena Gomez for Only Murders in the building.
Kathryn Hahn and Agatha all along, Kathryn Hahn and Agatha all along, Kathryn Hahn and Agatha all along, Kathryn Hahn and Agatha all along, Kathryn Hahn and Agatha all along. Anyway, I, I didn't realize that, like, rhymed or like, meshed so well. Anyway, Kathryn Hahn and Agatha all along did so. She's hilarious. She is so funny. Her facial expressions, her exaggerations, her exasperation.
Everything Kathryn Hahn does in Agatha All along is so good. And she is so selfish in this show, and she wants power and she will do anything to get power. She's ruthless and funny for an actor to find that balance of being ruthless and wanting all the power, and then being hilarious the next second, I feel like would be such a difficult balance for an artist or for an actor, and she does it seamlessly.
Selena Gomez and Only Murders in the Building I love her character in this because she's so millennial. Whatever. Yeah, okay. And I just, I just think it's so funny. It's so good. It's so good. So for me, it could go either way. Kathryn Hahn or Selena Gomez best performance by an actor in a Television Series, musical or Comedy?
I think this should go to Martin Short or Steve Martin for Only Murders in the Building. But how do you choose who to give it to? And they both are so good. They're both equally integral to the show, and they're both very funny in different ways that absolutely compliment each other. And so I don't know how you choose which receives the award.
Good luck to the people choosing, as long as it's one of them. And best performance by a Female Actor in a limited series, anthology series, or a motion picture made for television. I think this should go to Cristin Milioti for her role in The Penguin, she plays the main female lead, Sophia Falcone. If you watch, you will be reminded of Lady Gaga.
She reminds me so much of Lady Gaga in terms of her look, her acting, and she is so good in the Penguin. Same category. Male actor Colin Farrell for the Penguin.
All right, all right. And let's also not forget this category. I like this category. I think it's not as hyped as it should be. It's the cinematic and box office achievement category and the nominations in this category I've actually seen a few. They are alien, Romulus. Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice. Deadpool and Wolverine. Gladiator two, Inside Out to the wild, Robot Twisters, and Wicked.
I've seen Deadpool and Wolverine Inside Out, two twisters and wicked. I've talked about a few of these already. I want to talk about Deadpool and Wolverine. I think correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this was the only Marvel movie to come out this year. It was so funny. It was definitely crass. Do not bring your kids to see this movie.
But it was funny. It was so fun to see Hugh Jackman in his Wolverine role again. As a kid, I watched X-Men The Animated Series growing up and I loved it. I always thought, when I come of age, I'm going to be a mutant and I'm going to have these amazing super powers and now I do. My superpower is eating Taco Bell.
But my favorite mutant of all time, my. There are so many of them. There are over 100 different mutants that come in and out of the storyline in the comics, in the TV show, and my favorite mutant of all time finally made it to the big screen in a meaningful way. This mutant was in another, smaller role within an X-Men movie years and years and years ago, and it wasn't great this time.
My favorite mutant had a more prominent role, and it was so fun to see. And that is Gambit. And Gambit was played by Channing Tatum. I thought he did really well with the role. I hope Gambit resurfaces and future movies in the Marvel Universe. If you are a fan of the X-Men universe, who is your favorite mutant and why?
Or if you could have a superpower and be a mutant, what would your superpower be? And before we go on to the next movie I want to talk about, I do have to say the opening scene where Deadpool is dancing to insects. Bye bye bye had me rolling. It was so fun, so good. I know the dance. I know at least part of the dance.
And as like a boy band aficionado, I really appreciated this little nugget. And I want to talk about twisters. Who saw twisters this summer when it came out? I think it came out in July. I love the original movie and I was so excited to see this new one. I really like Glen Powell in this movie. I really like Glen Powell in a lot of movies.
I think he does really well and he's nominated for a Golden Globe, so good for him. And I thought the effects were amazing. It felt so real to me. I thought the storyline was lacking a little bit, but the effects totally made up for it. So if you haven't seen twisters, make sure to see it as soon as you can.
It's really, really good. Overall, out of all the nominations in this category, again, I would probably choose wicked. It's just such a spectacle that cannot be beat by the others.
